Apple's new rules for the European Union have caused quite a stir among browser makers. Beginning with iOS 17.4, browsers will no longer be necessary to use Apple's WebKit, the engine behind Safari. While this change might seem like a welcome one, Mozilla is not pleased with how the plan has worked out. According to a Mozilla spokesperson, this change would force independent browsers like Firefox to build and maintain two separate browser implementations, which is a burden that Apple will not have to bear.

However, Mozilla and other browser manufacturers will still need to have a WebKit version of their iOS browsers in other countries, including the US, as Apple is only making modifications in the EU to comply with the Digital Markets Act (DMA). This means that Firefox's official app for iOS, which is not a full version of Firefox, will still need to rely on Safari's web page-rendering code.

Epic Games and Spotify executives have also criticized Apple's DMA compliance measures, which are still pending approval from the EU Commission. Despite the criticism, Apple remains committed to its new rules and will continue to make changes as necessary.
