After only six months, Netflix's ad-supported plan has roughly five million active monthly subscribers, and this quick growth appears to be continuing.

At the company's first Upfront presentation, the number of customers who are pleased to watch Netflix with advertising was revealed. The statistics around advertising are also positive, with Netflix claiming that the number of users who do not get advertisements has more than quadrupled "since early this year."

Some may be surprised to learn that over 80% of ad-supported customers access the service through a television rather than a mobile device. Netflix also revealed that more than 70% of ad plan customers are between the ages of 18 and 49, with a global median age of 34.

The fact that more than a quarter of new subscribers opt for ad-supported service will delight advertisers. In comparison to competing streaming services, Netflix's ads are four times more likely to engage viewers than ads from its competitors.

Netflix intends to begin its password-sharing crackdown in the United States before the end of June, which will no doubt irritate some existing users (a.k.a. freeloaders) when they discover how it restricts access. A well-received ad plan, on the other hand, is excellent news for the streaming service since, according to a research published earlier this year, 71% of those freeloaders are inclined to subscribe if access is interrupted, and the lowest plan is likely to be where they arrive first. That, however, does not appear to be the case everywhere.
